If you are a city apartment dweller, renters aficionado, or simply live in a small space, let me introduce you to a hack that has saved my roommates and I space, convenience and privacy without sacrificing style. This one piece of furniture will be your new favorite reading spot and the most valuable real estate in the apartment!

The chaise lounge: 

Or the cot. Or the studio couch. Or the futon. Whatever you insist on calling it, this seat is comfortable, so versatile to style and functional. My roommates and I keep ours in the sunroom with a rocking chair and plenty of natural light. It’s a popular study spot, social and gathering space, as well as a convenient place to offer overnight guests to sleep because the door closes to the room and they have a private space with a comfortable cushioned cot. 

• Make the Space seem Bigger

Corner cozy: Tuck your chaise into a corner for a relaxing reading nook or conversation spot. This maximizes floor space and creates a defined area.

Opposite the action: Position the chaise opposite your sofa or another seating area to create a conversation nook that feels intimate without being cramped.

Window wonder: Embrace natural light by placing the chaise lounge beside a window. This is a perfect spot to soak up the sun with a good book.

• Make it Functional 

Ottoman magic: Ottomans with built-in storage double as a footrest and a place to stash away throws or magazines. A lot of lounges even have storage space underneath for things like bed linens, extra pillows and blankets.

Layer it up: We spruced ours up with blankets, a pillow and throws, and they also seem to change seasonally. 

Mini side table: A small side table beside the chaise provides a convenient spot for drinks, lamps, or plants.

Light and airy: Light-colored upholstery or a chaise with exposed legs makes the space feel open and airy. This is essential in a small space.                                                                 Bold statement (use sparingly): If you have enough room, a patterned or brightly colored chaise can add a touch of personality.
